MEN'S 4X400M RELAY CPTC MASTERS 50+ & 40+ -MILLROSE GAMES 2023

Sun, Feb 12-Even after Millrose Games yesterday, I found my way to the track, as did Bruce...and 8 others. John C. was still holed up in NYC and wouldn't be able to make it.

Bruce and I were scheduled for 6x200: 2@33, 2@32, and 2@31 on a 3-min rest. We hit the first in 33-high, the second in 32-mid, the third in 32-low, the forth in 32-low, at which point Bruce took his cue from his body and smartly called it quits. I continued in and dropped a 29-low and and 29-high.

Daryl and Bruce arrived (separately) at Jennings House at about 8:00, and we were off a few minutes later, a few snacks in tow. Without much traffic slowing our trip, we arrived at the Columbia University Hospital parking lot at around 9:45. We reached the entrance to the venue at about 10:00. Most of the guys were there; Nick would arrive just a few minutes later. We were set, except I had to use the urinal. Badly! I went for my usual single stall spots, but they were closed and locked. No luck. I looked around elsewhere downstairs. I stood in line to check in our team, which required full relay relay team, IDs, and a dose of patience. Seeing how crowded it was and fearing that I would soil myself, I stood in line, hoping it would quicken. It did, at least initially. Then, it stalled. I left the line to check the bathrooms again. I asked security if I could head upstairs. I was told no and that there was nothing to do but wait. I was desperate. I even reached for a water bottle...just in case. I was grabbing and squirming and writhing. I'd eventually get through the line, show my green wristband to the power that be, and then dash upstairs to the restroom. Thank goodness!

We arrived upstairs at about 10:40 or so. We sat in our usual spot. I did about a mile at 11:00, stretched some, then made my way down to the warm-up has at 11:35. (Before leaving the area, I gave instructions to our women's 60+ 4x400MR team, new to Millrose experience.) I'd stretch some more, do some strides, and then make my way down with teammates to the bottom floor check-in area at noon.

My teammates and I chatted a bit but then prepared to head back upstairs, race-ready. In the paddock area, we could watch on the big screen our M60 4x400MR team of Daryl, Wally, Duncan, and Bruce take the silver, while out W60 4x400MR team took the gold...as the only team in the age group. (The same was true of the only other women's team, M40.) Our guys ran tough, averaging 66 seconds per leg.

We were then up. John to Jacques to Nick to me. John got out strong, leading the way to the 200. A guy from Mass Velocity got him at the turn and took over leader duties. John held his own for sure, handing off the baton in second. Jacques did his thing, making short work of his 400 leg. Nick then took over and ran a strong leg, giving me the baton with a slight lead (.09 sec) over Garmin, a 40s team. I ran a modest first 200, perhaps relaxing too much over the first 50 meters. The runner from Garmin passed me at just before the 200 mark. On the backstretch, I heard Bruce say, "Don't worry. He'll come back on you." Hearing that loud and clear, 10 seconds later I'd give it my all to take him on the homestretch. I'd fall short by .04 seconds! And when I saw my split and out overall time, I was doubly disappointed (of course!). My face on the video tells the story; I was hiding nothing. I thought I could run a 56.xx split and that we could run 3:50 or so. Instead, I'd have to settle for a paltry 58.42 and 3:53.54.

We'd eventually get our stuff and head to the upper level to take in the rest of the meet. It...was...fan-tas-tic! Great races and records aplenty! Among my faves--(W)300m, (M)mile, (W)3000m, (W)600m, (M)&(W)60m, HSB4x800MR, and more!

And then there was the trek to Malecon for some Dominican-Carribean food. I'd get home at 10:00.

Fri, Feb 10-took off

Thurs, Feb. 9-did an easy 3M in 25:30 while in FL.

Wed, Feb 8-did a mile, then did a few relaxed sprints on the gravel parking lot next to the hotel. I did 3x around 100 in about 15 and 3x around 150 in 24.

Tues, Feb 8-took off, as I was en route to FL on business.

Mon, Feb 7-Ran mile to gym, had a strength and conditioning session, then ran back to the house.

Sun., Feb 5.-John and I did pairs of 300s, 200s, and 150s, negative-split style. The idea was to do the last 100 of the 300 in 16, the last 100 of the 200 in 15, and the last 100 of the 150 in 14. We'd take 3:00 between efforts.

2x300: 17, 17, 16...50sec

2x200: 16, 15...31sec

2x150: 8, 14...22sec
